Long Jetty Fremantle 1890 - plate by Heather TailorAbout the Guild

The West Australian Guild of China Painters (Inc) was established in 1964.  Its Foundation President was Amy Lakides, an artist and china painter whose work and teaching were well known throughout Australia and America.

The Guild's first Patroness, Mrs Flora Landells, was a pioneer of china painting and highly respected in the art world.  Later Lady Rita Court took over the role and was a much loved and respected advocate for the Guild. The current patron is renowned botanical artist Philippa Nikulinsky.

2014 marked the 50th Anniversary of the WA Guild's foundation. It was the first china painting association formed in Australia with the South Australian Guild following in 1965 and NSW in 1966. Special Golden Anniversary events were held throughout 2014 to mark the milestone and a book, written by Kaye MacLean and Anne Blake was published tracing the history of china painting in WA and the Guild's first 50 years (see more information).

Guild members meet six times per year at the Melkite Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Annunciation church hall, 165-167 Central Avenue, Mount Lawley with visitors and prospective members warmly welcomed.  Guest speakers at the meetings may give demonstrations of china painting techniques, or may be from other fields of art.  Members have access to an extensive library of reference books, videos and periodicals (see Library List).  The Guild publishes a newsletter six times per year.

A public exhibition and sale of work is held every year and other activities include painting days, trips to exhibitions and workshops by local and interstate artists. Pieces from the Guild's 'Collectables' (see Gallery One) are occasionally made available for public display.

There are no joining restrictions, all are welcome regardless of experience and only a love of hand painted china and china painting is required.  Current membership is $50 per annum.  To obtain more information about the Guild and membership please contact us via the link provided.  To apply for membership please print the application form and instructions (PDF reader required).
